Welcome to the first Recycle for Calderdale e-zine!
It’s one more way to help you help the environment by recycling as much as possible.
In this issue, we’ll take a look at Christmas recycling, including what to do with your tree, and how you can swap those unwanted presents!
Recycle your Christmas leftovers
There’s nothing like a good Christmas to create piles of waste. But remember, so much of your Christmas waste can be recycled, including old electrical gadgets, wrapping paper, cardboard packaging, bottles, cans; and household items you’ve replaced as well. We’ll collect lots of it via your household collections, but if you want, you can take it all along to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre – and enter our prize draw!
Have a look at our Christmas Recycling Guide for more information.

Brighouse is back
We’re pleased to announce that the Brighouse Household Waste Recycling Centre is back in operation after extensive improvements. The new facility has been carefully planned to be more user-friendly with features such as a dedicated exit lane, more sunken skips to reverse up to and more opportunities to recycle a wide range of domestic waste. This should make using the Centre easier, safer and more efficient for everyone. Have a look at the Brighouse opening guide for more details about opening times, and what you can take to the Centre.

Recycle your Christmas tree
It’s brought you a festive feeling for a few weeks, but what do you do with your Christmas tree after that? In Calderdale, you can give it a whole new life by recycling it. To find out when and where you can take your tree, have a look at page 2 of the Christmas Recycling Guide (see first item above) for dates and locations.

Why not swap those unwanted presents!
Everyone gets gifts they don’t really want at Christmas – yet your rejects could be just what someone else was wishing for. That’s why we’re holding a special Swap Shop at Wellholme Park, Brighouse on Sunday 11th January from 11am until 3pm – with the Pulse Roadshow.
Just bring along what you don’t want and see if you can swap it for something you do – it’s as easy as that! There’s a Christmas tree collection point in the park and we’re right by Brighouse Household Waste Recycling Centre, so you can clear out all your unwanted Christmas stuff in one go (view a map of Wellholme park). If you can’t make it to the Swap Shop, remember, you can always find a good home for your unwanted gifts by visiting the Freecycle website or by donating them to your local charity shops.

Your New Year’s resolution – keep on recycling!
You’ve done really well over the last few years, increasing the waste recycled from just 9% in 2000 to 25% in 2008. But with up to 60% of your waste recyclable, there’s still lots more to do, and we’ve to meet a target of recycling 40% of Calderdale’s total domestic waste by 2010. To find all about the improvements to your recycling and refuse service happening in 2009, and when the changes will happen where you are, just go to the Recycle for Calderdale website, and use the postcode search facility.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on this new e-zine – or any other recycling issues – so please get in touch by emailing info@recycleforcalderdale.org. We look forward to hearing from you. |
