General information
Compost is formed through the breakdown of organic material, a great deal of which is disposed of regularly in our household bins. Indeed, 40% of household waste could be composted, but instead is landfilled and as such is a major cause of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, as it breaks down in landfill. So the more that we compost, the less we need to landfill and the lower the methane emissions and damage to the ozone layer.

Home composting
The best way to deal with organic waste (e.g. food and kitchen waste) is to home compost it – if you have a garden or somewhere where you can locate a home composter bin. This can be done quickly and easily in your own garden and avoids the transport costs and fuel usage of garden waste collection.

Special Offer: Calderdale residents can receive a discounted home composting bin for just £8.00 (for a 220 litre bin, including delivery – normal price £39.95). A larger (330 litre) bin is also available for just £10.00 (including delivery – normal price £49.95).

Residents should call 0845 077 0757 or click here for more information.

How to home compost:

  • place your compost bin on bare soil, giving micro-organisms and worms access to the waste
  • add your garden and kitchen waste
  • mix the contents on a regular basis to accelerate the process
  • ensure the contents are kept damp (especially in hot and dry weather conditions)
  • once the material resembles compost, empty the bin, examine the material and put any larger pieces back in the compost bin for further processing
  • place the compost on your garden and watch the flowers grow!
