From the 1st September 2007 the majority of Hebden Bridge traders will stop issuing new plastic bags when goods are purchased. In an attempt to reduce household waste and environmental pollution all Hebden Bridge shoppers will be encouraged to bring their own shopping bags or alternatively buy a reusable and environmentally friendly carrier bag offered in many of the local shops.
To make this transition easier, the Co-op have kindly sponsored the production of a free Fairtrade reusable cotton bag for each Hebden Bridge household. For those shoppers who forget to bring a bag there will be an alternative. These bags will have the properties of a "plastic" carrier bag, but have the following advantages:
- plant starch based
- home compostable
Residents in Hebden bridge are urged to use any remaining plastic bags to sort their recycling for Kerbside recycling collection.
